AXIOM PROGRAM
Overview
OASES AXIOM Program is open to all high school students; it is designed for English proficient students, though students who are comfortable with their English but not fluent are welcome to join. Our program vision is to teach youth applicable skills in leadership and community development, as well as college and career readiness. We offer academic tutorial clinics, “academic gameplan” development and support, leadership skills, and emotional well-being workshops. Our volunteers from UC Berkeley provide one-on-one and group tutoring, as well as mentoring, and our program staff designs practical workshops, teambuilding activities, as well as social, safe space for diverse students. We have about 2 weekend field trips every semester, and attendance at these is
highly encouraged.
Schedule
You choose 2 days of tutorial and /enrichment, and 1 day of mentorship. Students can choose EITHER Monday and Wednesday OR Tuesday and Thursday, 4:00 to 6:15 pm; once you select those days, you will come on those days all semester long (you cannot pick and choose week by week). You will meet with your mentor once a week, which you schedule on your own time Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Open to any student in 9th through 12th grade on a first-come/first-served basis.

TYRO PROGRAM FOR NEW IMMIGRANT STUDENTS
Overview
"Tyro" is Latin for "new beginner," and our program is designed for students who have been in the United States for less than 3 years. We offer college and career workshops which focuses on English language practice, as well as specific college information for recent immigrant students. UC Berkeley students offer one-on-one tutoring as well as an optional mentorship program, where you’d be able to spend time with college students who are also immigrants themselves. This program is conducted in English; most of our tutors are multi-lingual and speak Chinese, but students will do best if they are ELD Level II and above. It is a very supportive environment of students who are all learning, so please apply if you want to belong.
Schedule
Students come Monday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:15 pm. Students may choose to participate in a Mentorship program, where you will be matched up with college mentors, with whom you’ll meet and spend time with on your own time and schedule.

ATTENDANCE And Enrollment Policy
Attendance is very important to the success of our program. Please help us help your students succeed and respect our program staff and volunteer time by ensuring that your students attend our program once accepted. Please send a note when your student misses a day of program; more than three unexcused absences is grounds for dismissal from the program. This is not a drop-in program; all students must attend every day.
It is important for students to arrive on time at 4:00, and students who are tardy more than 6 times in a semester without an excuse note will be dropped from the program. If your student cannot come at 4:00 pm, please do not commit to the program; we only have 2 hours together each day, so it’s important for students to be there the entire time. Other policies and procedures will be discussed at program orientation; we expect that you will help us with all policies by ensuring your child’s compliance.
Application Policy
All students are accepted into the program for the entire school year. OASES does not discriminate against any applicants on the basis of race, ethnicity, disability, color, sexual identity, creed, religion, sex, gender, age, national origin, ancestry, citizenship or immigration status, or AIDS/HIV status. All information submitted to us will be kept strictly confidential and is used for planning and evaluation purposes only.
Application Process
If your child is interested in our program, please complete an application. The supplemental application is available at the OASES Center. Students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis; once spaces fill up, students will be placed on a first-come, first-served waiting list.
A complete application contains the following three items:
- Complete OASES application with accurate contact information, home addresses and signatures.
- Income verification (a photocopy of a paycheck stub, government benefits check, tax return, or written indication of your income).
- A copy of your child’s most recent report card.
Return completed applications in person or by mail to our center at:
OASES, 196 10th Street (at Jackson), Oakland, CA 94607
You will be notified by mail of acceptance into our program. If there are more students than we have spots, you will be placed on a waiting list in the order which we receive their applications. Once a student is accepted into the program, parents must attend the orientation meeting and pay the activities fee.
