125 youth in grades 2nd - 5th, 3 hours/day, 5 days/week Personalized Academic Tutoring OASES trains its staff and U.C. Berkeley student volunteers to provide age-appropriate and grade-level specific academic tutoring that is skills-based and aligned with the school-day curriculum. LEAP provides academic assistance in a variety of subjects, with a specific focus on literacy and math with an effectively low tutor to student ratio of 1:1 to 1:4. Enrichment and Leadership Workshops OASES provides a wide variety of enrichment opportunities that often are not offered during the school-day such as Girls' Sports Empowerment, Diversity Education, Youth Leadership, Multimedia Arts, Creative Writing, Health and Nutrition, Martial Arts, Financial Literacy, and much more. Some workshops offer girls-only and boys-only options. Workshops are ever evolving to fit the needs and interests of our students. Some examples of workshop opportunities offered in the 2010-2011 school year include: Act Out Loud: Students will be working in small groups to learn how to write, organize, plan and perform their own skits. The topics will range from current events in the world and community, to self-expression and topics chosen by the students. We will start by learning the basics of skit writing and performing and then students will have the opportunity to write and perform their own. At the end of the semester, all the students will write and perform a skit/drama together as a collective class. Students will learn both how to write and perform a skit, while also learning another way to express and educate others about themselves and community issues through drama and movement. Go Green: This workshop will focus on the education, practice and action that students can take towards learning about the environment and how they can take of the place where they live. Topics will include sustainable art, things we can do as individuals, classroom, community and the world, and ending the semester with the students planning a communal project. From this workshop, students will learn and hopefully become interested in the world they live in and how they can take care of it. It will give them the tools to educate themselves and learn how to take action both at an individual and collective level. Artist Math: Artist Math aims to supplement third grade math standards while encouraging creativity through group and individual projects. One of the units stresses geometry and the use of shapes in art. Example activities include building pictures using tangrams and also an origami diorama. Other units teach students the basics of symmetry and graphing through drawing and painting. The objective of this workshop is to inspire an interest in math through an artistic medium. Chemistry to the Rescue : Each week, students will be presented a challenge related to the Super Villain Sinister Cyanide. They will perform experiments exploring the states of matter and using forensic evidence and techniques such as chromatography to solve clues left behind by the mad chemist. By the end of the semester, we hope to discover her whereabouts and stop her once and for all. Girl Power: Students in Girl Power will learn about why it is so great to be a girl. We will challenge ourselves to be physically fit and strong by playing sports and practicing karate. We will explore issues important to us--friendship, family, life and much more, build self-confidence and positive self-image. Perfect Cents: In Perfect Cents, students will learn about money. How to earn it, how to save up for that brand new bike you want, how to spend wisely and get the most for your money, and how to give for a good cause. Boys leadership: In this workshop, students will be participating in a variety of activities from sports to discussions that are important to young males. Students will learn to build their cooperation and team skills while having a great time being active. Students will be taught the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how that affects every aspect of their lives. By the end of the semester, students will have confidence in their abilities regardless of skill level and work together with their classmates to achieve a common goal. They will also be able to understand the complexities of winning and losing and realize that the most important aspect is that they are improving their own skills and health rather than 'winning'. Creative Arts: In this workshop, students will focus on all forms of creative arts with an emphasis on poetry and visual arts. Students will gain knowledge of the basic elements and development that goes into each art form. Students will be engaged in grade level writing which will greatly enhance their school work and will learn to find their voice and discover what subjects are of interest to them. Students will create original works of art as well as study art from various periods of time as well as those from different cultures. At the end of the semester, students will know what elements are required in specific forms of art and will be able to create these various forms. Students will also be able to incorporate their creative writing with the visual arts to create a piece of work that is both visual and literary. The Music in Me: Students will explore the art of rhythm making, song writing, and body movement as they express their inner creativity through the performing arts. Students will also learn basic music theory, and how to collaborate with fellow classmates on weekly music challenges. Nerd for Word: Students will learn how to use Microsoft Word by doing fun computer projects such as letters, cards, newsletters, flyers, short storybooks, and group presentations. Health Nuts: Students will learn what it means to eat healthy through planning, growing, and preparing their own meals. When we're not in the green house raising our own produce/seasoning, we'll be in the classroom whipping up creative and nutritionally balanced snacks and meals!
